The CUB Reduction Reward Scheme was set up utilising the National Grid ESO Demand Flexibility Service. It is a service designed to incentivise businesses to turn down power usage at peak times of demand on the grid to help balance the system in return for a financial reward.

Nigel Gear, Swann-Morton’s Finance Department Manager, describes the process: “CUB gets quotes from up to 20 suppliers and shows us details of the four or five best deals. They also advise us on which would best suit us, primarily in terms of cost, but also in relation to the length and nature of the contract. It just wouldn’t be feasible for us to do all of this in-house.”

As energy specialists they have the knowledge, processes and resources to negotiate with several energy suppliers. They put together a shortlist, along with their recommendation, and then we make the final decision.

The UK energy market is in unchartered territory – as I write this, day ahead prices are trading at over £500/MWH for electricity. Putting that into perspective – last year, during lockdown, Day Ahead prices traded as low £10/MWH. Over the last 12 months, the Winter 21 price has risen from £51/MWH to £159/MWH, a 211% increase!

Before you even walk into the newly refurbished reception area you cannot miss the ground source heat pump installation on your left, which immediately puts Lincolnshire Herbs into a class of their own. This installation, which draws water from 60m below the site is unique in Europe as it makes Lincolnshire Herbs the only glasshouse that has developed and used GSHP technology. This has reduced carbon emissions by about 50% on site.
