June 23 saw a degree of volatility return to the market as participants weigh up ever changing fundamentals with supply/demand as we appraoch Winter 23. Overall the month of June was a bullish one with Winter 23 gas starting the month at 105.42p/th but closing higher at 134.50p/th.

The simplest way to explain flexible purchasing supply contracts is to look at how they differ from fixed-price contracts. The main difference is what happens with the wholesale element of an energy bill. If we look at the breakdown of an electricity bill (as of April 23), wholesale electricity makes up 60.16% of the bill.

The UK energy market is in unchartered territory – as I write this, day ahead prices are trading at over £500/MWH for electricity. Putting that into perspective – last year, during lockdown, Day Ahead prices traded as low £10/MWH. Over the last 12 months, the Winter 21 price has risen from £51/MWH to £159/MWH, a 211% increase!
