Royden Fairfax founded CUB UK in 1994. He believed in helping businesses get the best value for money from their energy provider, and continued to put clients’ needs at the heart of the company as it expanded. Over 10 years later his grandson Louis Fairfax, the managing director of CUB UK, is following in his family’s footsteps and taking the March-based energy consultancy into the future.

Louis joined the energy consultancy business in 2005, having started his working life at Tesco. After being promoted to team leader at the age of 17, Louis became responsible for supporting new or struggling stores across the region. His talent for troubleshooting and staff development shone through and after a relocation, Louis felt the time was right to turn his eye to the family business to bring it into the 21st century with a bang.

“I came on board with a mission to build on the success of my parents and grandparents. Growing up alongside a business gives you a unique understanding of its marketplace and an appreciation for what it takes to be successful. We’re all unashamedly hardworking, but will always take the time to make each other a well-deserved cuppa each day.

My parents and grandparents had established a successful platform that had huge potential change how the industry worked. By involving the board, and the rest of the team, we outlined a shared vision for how we would continue to grow in, what was becoming, a more competitive market place.

I have always believed that by focussing on ways in which you can improve customer experience, you will continue to grow as a business. And that’s what we worked towards in a big way.

After an extensive research and consultation period, we drafted up our updated ethical company mission, which outlined exactly what we stood for as a business. This lead on to an overhaul of how we delivered our energy consultancy services to our clients as we developed tiered packages based on their requirements.

We went through a re-branding exercise and officially launched the repositioned CUB UK in April 2014. It was the result of two years of hard work by the whole team and it was a great achievement for us. The newly designed I&C and SME packages were very well received by the industry and fuelled a sustained influx of new business over the last year.

Since the launch, I’ve continued to coordinate the creation and delivery of our strategic plan and ensure we’re reporting on our activity at monthly management meetings. I work with our client services team on a regular basis and personally manage a number of our accounts.

Thankfully, CUB has always enjoyed an environment of constant learning. It’s something my parents and grandparents strongly believed in, and it’ll continue to be important to us as we grow under our refreshed brand. Staff progression is important, and we’re firm believers in investing in training and professional development where needed.

We’re an ambitious team and work hard to ensure we’re always in a position to innovate and be at the forefront of our ever-changing industry. Our people are certainly customer focussed, but also like working in a friendly and fun-loving environment. Sadly, ours is an industry that sometimes gets a bad reputation as it’s currently unregulated, but our staff are committed to going above and beyond to make sure our clients get the best possible deal, in a transparent and ethical way.

Not one to rest on our laurels, we’re always looking for ways to improve our client satisfaction. Some clients have been with us for over 20 years and we receive five star reviews in our regular customer satisfaction surveys. As we approach a quarter of a century in business, we’re looking forward to achieving a sustainable level of growth that will position us as the leading ethical energy consultant in the UK.
