Planting Roots

In the Community

On Thursday 10th April, the Green Team from local business, CUB (UK) Ltd, an energy consultancy based in March, got involved with gardening on the grounds of the National Trust’s Peckover House as part of their aim to volunteer on projects around the local area.

CUB established their Green Team, organised by Louis Fairfax, Managing Director at CUB, to help charities and non-profit organisations around the local area.

The team arrived at Peckover House in the morning and began the day discussing which trees they would be planting; the selection included elm, oak and walnut which were to be planted around the Peckover estate and along Harecroft Road.

The Green Team, consisting of CUB employees, who work in all aspects of the business, donned their gardening gloves and started work digging and planting ready for the summer months ahead.

Holly Redden, SME account manager at CUB said of the experience: “It’s great to get out of the office and in the open fresh air, working on fantastic projects for charities like the National Trust. Also to plant trees is an act for future generations to enjoy – one of my favourite sayings is ‘the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, the second best time is now’ which is exactly what we have achieved”

The Peckover House gardening team, consisting of Allison Napier, Jenny Windsor and Janet Crockford, picked out suitable spots and instructed the Green Team on how to plant the trees.

Allison said, “We were very impressed by how well the team got stuck in to the task; they had never planted trees before and did an excellent job.  The estate is a rare survival of a rural landscape in the centre of a busy town and so it is imperative that we replace trees which have died or been removed”.

Peckover House will be holding events later in the year such as Bee Weekend Saturday 28th and 29th June from 12pm-4pm with demonstrations and introductions to beekeeping and Music for a Summer Evening, with The Essex Blues Brothers, so bring your picnic and blankets for an evening of live music.
